Quiero en primer lugar expresar mi agradecimiento a los organizadores y directores de la Global Social Business Summit, por la amable invitación que me han cursado para participar y dirigirles unas palabras.
Muy especialmente deseo hacer llegar mi reconocimiento al Profesor Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate y creador de este nuevo concepto de empresa social. Estoy segura de que al igual que sucediera con los microcréditos, el éxito sonreirá a este nuevo paso adelante en la lucha contra la desigualdad.
Desde siempre me he sentido profundamente identificada con este tipo de iniciativas, y de hecho he tenido la fortuna de asistir en el pasado a varias Cumbres Mundiales del Microcrédito y de conseguir que la última de ellas se pudiera llevar a cabo, con gran éxito, en mi país, España.
Esta Cumbre es para mí, por tanto, una gran oportunidad para profundizar en los aspectos más novedosos de la empresa social.
Es necesario comprender desde el principio, que la empresa social es efectivamente un negocio, que debe sostenerse por sí mismo para poder cubrir los gastos que origina.
La empresa social tiene como objetivo principal cambiar la situación económica y social de sus trabajadores reinvirtiendo el beneficio en la propia empresa, para crear nuevos empleos.
Por eso es tan importante este nuevo concepto de empresa social, que debe ser entendida como una nueva categoría de negocio que en ningún caso busca la maximización de beneficios, y sí atender a su propia supervivencia para posteriormente crear mejores condiciones de vida.
Y por esta razón es de tanto interés esta Global Social Business Summit, en la que ustedes toman parte. Con su esfuerzo pueden ayudar a cambiar, aunque sea lentamente, la mentalidad imperante en el mundo de los negocios, y orientar los mismos hacia un ámbito más humano y solidario.
Finalmente, deseo expresar mi más sincero reconocimiento y agradecimiento a las empresas que ya colaboran en esta nueva actividad, y aquellas que con toda seguridad se van a unir en el futuro para alcanzar el noble objetivo de mitigar el azote de la pobreza.
A todos los participantes en la Cumbre les deseo el mayor de los éxitos y mucho acierto en las medidas que puedan acordar de cara al futuro.

I would like, first of all, to thank the organizers and directors of the Global Social Business Summit, for kindly inviting me to join this event and to speak at the Opening ceremony.
I am particularly grateful to Professor Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and founder of this new concept of social business. I am sure that, as before with microcredits, this new step in the fight against inequality will also prove successful.
I have always felt a deep sympathy for this sort of initiatives, and in fact, I have been fortunate enough to attend several World Microcredit Summits, including the latest one, which we were able to hold in my country, Spain, with excellent results.
This Summit, therefore, gives me a good opportunity to take a closer look at the more innovative features of social business.
We need to understand from the beginning that a social business must, in fact, be self-supporting, in order to cover its own costs.
The main target of a social business is to change the financial and social status of its workers by reinvesting its profits back into the company, in order to create new jobs.
Here lies the importance of this new concept of social business, which must be understood as a new sort of enterprise which never seeks maximum benefits, but works for its own survival so that it can later create better life conditions.
And that is why this Global Social Business Summit, which you attend today, is so valuable. With your efforts you may help change, however slowly, current attitudes in the business world, and turn them towards a stronger solidarity with our fellow beings.
I finally want to express my most sincere appreciation and gratitude to those companies which already contribute to this new field, and also to those which will surely join them in future, in order to achieve the noble aim of relieving the burden of poverty.
I wish all participants the greatest success in their search for the right measures to be adopted, in aid of the Summit’s goals.
