Address by Her Majesty Queen Sofia of Spain at the conmemoration of the 700th anniversary of Exeter College

Oxford (Reino Unido), 4.29.2014

Mr. Andrew Hamilton, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, Mrs. Frances Cairncross, Rector of Exeter College, Señor Embajador, Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Students,

In 1989, I was appointed an Honorary Fellow of Exeter College, a distinction and honour which has always filled me with pride.

I am truly happy to join you today for the celebrations of the 700th anniversary of Exeter College, an august institution which, throughout its history, has contributed to the development of society through its remarkable educational vocation and its excellent academic achievement.

Spain shares in the joy of this commemoration, not only because of the Chair of Spanish Studies which, since 1927, has borne the name of King Alfonso XIII, but also because your university is one of the leading Centres for teaching and studying Spanish, one the world’s great languages, together with English.

Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity today to emphasize the importance of Spanish studies. I am certain that the new Fellowship, announced by your Vice-Chancellor, will make a significant contribution to this field. I sincerely congratulate the University of Oxford and the “Santander Universidades” for this praiseworthy initiative.

Before I finish, I would like to propose a toast to these seven hundred years of Exeter College and to the promising and brilliant future which, I am sure, awaits this beloved Institution.

Please, stand up for the College toast: FLOREAT EXON!

"...Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity today to emphasize the importance of Spanish studies. I am certain that the new Fellowship will make a significant contribution to this field...."

Thank you very much.

Muchas gracias.
