Mr Juan Carlos González Díez was born in Burgos on 2 October 1962.
He entered the General Military Academy in 1981, becoming an artillery lieutenant in July 1986. Having initially served in the Armoured Division, he was promoted to captain in 1990 and posted to the 5th Campaign Artillery Group in Menorca. He subsequently served as a helicopter flight instructor pilot at the Army Aviation Academy.
In 1998 he joined the Army General Staff where he worked on the professionalization of the army and on the full incorporation of women into the armed forces. In 2001 he was appointed Deputy Defence Counsellor at Spain's Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels (including to its Political and Security Committee). In 2003 he joined the General Staff of the Army Airmobile Force as Chief of Operations and between 2005 and 2008 he was posted to the Ministry of Defence where he took part in the preparatory work for the drafting of Act 8/2006 of 24 April, on army and navy personnel, and for the regulatory development of this Act.
While a lieutenant colonel, during the period from 2008 to 2011, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Army Airmobile Force and in 2013, as a colonel, he became the Deputy Chief of said unit. In 2016 he worked at the National Defence Advanced Studies Centre (CESEDEN) until his promotion to the rank of brigadier in April 2017, a post in which he was at the command of the Army Airmobile Force until December 2018.
From 2018 to 2020 he was the Director of Office of the Chief of the Defence Staff and in 2020 he was appointed Head of Office of the Chief of the Army Staff.
In December 2020, holding the rank of major general, he assumed command of the San Marcial Division and oversaw its transformation, which entailed the integration into its new organization of the Special Operations Command, the 6th Parachute Brigade Almogávares, the Mountain Troops Command, the Army Airmobile Force and the 1st Information Operations Regiment.
He has taken part in a number of international peacekeeping missions, including a United Nations mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1994, a European Union mission at the EU Administration of Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) mission Allied Joint Force Command Naples (Italy) in 2012.
He is a General Staff course graduate as well as a graduate of the NATO Defense College in Rome. He received his degree in Economic and Business Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid in 1993 and has a Master's degree in Security and Defence from the same university.
He is a widower and father to one daughter.
Mr Juan Carlos González Díez was appointed Head of the Planning and Coordination Office of the Secretariat-General of the Household of His Majesty The King by Royal Decree 432/2024 of 29 April 2024.
